Apulian Chianca for flooring, origin of the name

The term chianca has a medieval origin and it means “stone slab”. But obtaining this slabs has never been simple, especially in the past. In fact its recovery was entirely hand-made by the “cavamonti”.

Most valuable slabs were the thinnest with a thickness between 6 and 8 centimetres. Once extracted, obviously the slab presented itself totally irregular so that stone masons began to make it rectangular by using a pickaxe on the edges thus creating the chipped edges that are still used nowadays. Then the thickness was uniformed by hammering on each side with a pickaxe in order to rough the surface of the chianca.

A number of times surface was tapped with a tool called “fifth hand”, a small iron hammer with five teeth on one side and eight on the other. First was used the side with five teeth and then the side with eight teeth was used. In this way the tile called “chianca” was born.

Nowadays, naturally, the technology and our machinery provide a great help for the production of chianca but some processes cannot detach themselves from the original in order to obtain chiancas that look more authentic and more similar to the original ones.

Type of floors with Apulian Chianca stone

The formats that can be obtained are: random, that is random measures or free length, that keep the same width and variable length.

We developed different typologies of chianca for flooring, including simple chianca, with a less rough surface for the absence of hammerings and depressions and white chianca, with a much lighter shade. The choice may vary according to furniture and personal taste of the customer, in general chianca easily fits every type of style, from classic to modern, giving a touch of glamour to your home. Over time, chianca acquired more and more importance, so much to be used as indoor flooring, constituting a fundamental piece of furniture in itself.

Installation is practical and simple and width of grouts can be customized according to personal taste and stylistic design choice.
